30-day photo journal – Day 1
Welcome to day 1 of my dinner in a life a dietitian mom photo journal.
I want to show you what life as a dietitian/working mom looks like for our family. Every day (or most days!) my goal is to have a family meal that we can all share. I have one child who eats everything and one child who doesn’t!
Today for dinner, I served a roasted vegetable medley, whole wheat noodles, home-made banana muffins, grilled haloumi and grilled tofu. My kids are also allowed to take anything left over from their lunch bags and put that on the table too. We are also trying to get in the habit of getting our kids to help us set the table (notice the cutlery – that’s not how I would do it, but I am trying to let it go!)
Notice that the dinner is served family style – so that my kids can pick and choose from what is offered and are able to fill their own plates according to what looks good to them and how hungry they think they might be.
Child 1 – Eats Everything!
My one child (who typically eats everything!) choose noodles, haloumi, tofu and a muffin. He declined the roasted vegetables.
Child 2 – My little one who is more tentative…
My other little one, skipped the tofu and the veggies on the first go around, wanted the noodles and the muffin and with confirmation that haloumi is cheese and he normally likes cheese, tried the cheese. He told me the haloumi was “really good” and had a few more pieces. He tried the tofu and described it as “his least favourite thing on the table, but he still kind of liked it”.
After the meal
Well – today’s dinner was hit. Both boys had several helpings of pasta, muffins, haloumi and tofu. Neither tried the vegetables. Child 1 ate his whole plate and child 2 left a few noodles.
In our house – I encourage the boys to eat what feels right for their body. They get neither praise nor reprimand for the amount they eat – whether its a lot of a little at any given meal.
Keep reading – because I can guarantee you it won’t go like this everyday!
